Upcoming scholastics information released - some already qualified for state!

It is hard to believe but the scholastic season is now underway - happily with the increased interest in chess! The Scholastic State Championship is scheduled for the weekend of March 25, and there are already 35 players qualified for this championship.



Remember there are different paths to qualify for the State Scholastic Championship outlined below:


All 12th graders are allowed to play!!!


To qualify:​

  • receive a 1st-3rd placement in your grade at the ICA scholastic regional tournaments (you may play in any region!), or

  • earn 3.0 pts. or better in regionals.​​

  • Regional Events:

    • East Regional Scholastic​, January 21, ISU SUB, Pocatello

    • West Regional Scholastic, January 28, Riverside Hotel, Boise

    • South Central Scholastic, February 11, Robert Stewart Middle School, Twin Falls

    • North Regional Scholastic, March 4, CDA Library, Coeur d'Alene

Alternate means:

  • participate in the Idaho Closed, or

  • participate in two alternative, ICA sponsored, US Chess Federation rated tournaments,

    • EIO​

    • WIO

    • SIO

    • NIO

    • Nampa Tournaments

    • Norman Friedman Memorial

    • Idaho Open, or

    • approval by ICA.

The State Scholastic Championship has three sections: K-5th grade, 6-8th grade, and 9-12th grade.

  • Winners of each section will be representatives for Idaho at the National Denker, Rockafeller, and Barber Tournament of Champions.

  • Each grade winner will be declared a grade-level champion.

  • The top three in each section shall be declared 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in respective sections.

  • Additionally, the top three in each section will be invited to play in the Idaho Tournament of Champions where the winner will be the Idaho State Scholastic Champion.
